I had a talk with my mother about her goal to complete her thesis, and that got me thinking about my own ambitions as a songwriter. Specifically, I thought about the concept of sacrifice, because it seems to me that pretty much all of the public figures we consider "great" have made large, sometimes extreme, personal sacrifices in their single-minded pursuit of their goals. Perhaps because of the sheer size of this competitive world we live in, accomplishing anything big nowadays seems to require a certain neglect for the well-rounded life, and in a way a certain sacrifice of our own humanity. The famous ones of us are also often the most extreme. Is success worth the sacrifices we now have to make? Here's some links to some articles related to the subject.
